Learning about business through procedural generated hype

A couple of weeks have passed since the release of No Man's Sky and it's safe to say that things have gone less than expected for both prospective players and developer Hello Games. I did not bother purchasing the game due to the lack of pre-release reviews and the litany of scathing reviews from day one and onward. But I must say that the release of what some argue is the most hyped game of all time has had a silver lining, at least for me. I've learned a lot about the core of keeping a business alive through watching Hello Games flounder through this.

I just played Fractured Space

I was very excited when I booted up Steam last weekend and saw that Fractured Space was free to play. It's one of many space born in the space-sim boom created by Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous. I had read about this particular game in a couple “If you like spaceships try these games!” style articles and it looked really great for an Alpha. I had a lot of fun trying this game out but like a lot of the popular PC games these days, Fractured Space suffers from being an Alpha.

A Wicked Wednesday

It is Wednesday, so it is time for comics. I'm writing this later than I would like too, but that will change in the near future as I start my new job and subsequently reset my life-rhythm. I haven't read everything that came out today but I try to focus on the big independent stuff, so if you are looking for me to talk about Marvel and DC comics in this entry prepare to be disappointed. Some neat things did release today: The Wicked + The Divine (2), Manifest Destiny (8), Next Testament (11), and The Squidder (1).
Lots of other things happened today, but I either wasn't dazzled by them in the store, wasn't dazzled at home, or (in one case) the writer and artists identified themselves with their twitter handles, which filled my mouth with a really inky unpleasant taste.

What could have been.

Today I was made aware of a Television show that existed only as a pilot in 1999, but had it carried on it would have changed the world.
This show was called "Heat Vision and Jack." This piece of art was written by Dan Harmon (creator of Community) and Rob Schrab (Monster House) with direction from Ben Stiller. Is you interest peaked? Well it should be. "Heat Vision and Jack" follows Jack Austin (played by Jack Black) an astronaut who got too close to the sun and became a genius and his deadbeat roommate-turned Motorcycle Heat Vision (voiced by Owen Wilson). The talking motorcycle is an amalgam of most Owen Wilson characters and Jack is apparently powered by the sun. My feelings on this show are pretty clear, but give it a watch if you can spare thirty minutes.  Here is the pilot episode.
I don't believe this miracle of TV went any farther than one prefect episode, but can you imagine where the world would be if it had?
Oh Hello there,
my name is John and if you are here it means you are probably some sort of acquaintance of mine that I've gotten to look at my new blog, possibly under protest or duress and for that I am sorry. We live a pretty full and well rounded geek life around here, and I will be doing my best to share that Geeky life with you. On this blog there will be reviews of comics, games, movies, and shows, I will discuss things and it will be informative. If you are looking to geek up your life a little bit, this is the place where you can get a good solid grasp on what's what. Sorry first blog posts are so awkward, but it's like loosing your arm in a lightsaber fight, it happens pretty fast and when its done it's done. Welcome, stick around for a while I'm just getting started.
